Example UV Remapping of Poser 3 Models.

Yes Virginia, Bryce 3.1 really can produce hi rez bump maps on Poser 3 figures. Only problem is you really can't do it with the Zygote/Poser3 UV maps.

(more info follows...) (or click here for Super Hero Mask image)

This UV map (not to be confused with the image texture applied to it) was made in RDS 5.0.2's Mesh Modeler using the Poser 3 head set. Due to a couple of RDS/Poser 3 problems which clobber the UV mapping, to get it to work I had to go through 4 different conversions, starting with a Poser3 VDU and ending up with a Bryce friendly Painter3D OBJ ( here's how). It uses a face (planar) projection that makes the most of the 1000x1000 map that is used internally by the UV format. The Zygote/Pzr3 UV maps are excellent "whole body" maps but they just don't have enough UV coordinates for close in work. You can get around this by creating huge texture maps, but due to the way the mapping extrapolates between individual UV coordinates, it doesn't work very well with bumps.

I used a symmetrical tile pattern for the texture (884x1000), copied it to a bump map and then did some smearing of the texture/bump map in P3D. It maps pretty well except as it approaches the seam/edge, where it becomes extremely distorted along the Y axis (not shown above, but can be seen on the pants below ). I also created a reflection map applied only to the eyes and painted the pupils red. Here's a greatly reduced image of the front mesh from P3D :

Another often called for scenario is the mapping of straight lines. The asymmetrical nature of the Pzr3 UV maps makes this rather difficult. The following image again uses face mapping and a straight line KPT Gradient Designer texture. The X axis lines map quite well but the Y axis lines have problems at the seams.

Here's the P3D mesh:

It's important to remember that the UV coordinate map is permanently married to the model it was created for. So is that there is no way (that I know of) to offer the remapping without including the model, a very clear violation of Zygote's copyrights. If you've read this far you most likely have an interest in this rather esoteric subject and I posted this in the hope that someone might be able to figure a way around this. If you do, please let me know! Thanks-D
